Region North is characterised by the extensive Wadden Sea area with its many sandbanks and gullies. The ever-shifting character of the fairways and the shallows therefore make the navigation and manoeuvring of ships particularly difficult. Loodswezen offers a major contribution to ensuring that shipping traffic in the ports of Harlingen, Delfzijl, Eemshaven, Den Helder and Lauwersoog runs smoothly and safely, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our experienced pilots have been trained to such an extent that they can find the safe routes in this treacherous area in all weathers.
Care for the environment plays a major role in the Wadden Sea region. Our expertise is consequently of great importance to prevent ships from inflicting damage to this unique natural area. In region North, 17 registered pilots guide more than 3,000 ships a year over the waterways to and from the ports. It is expected that the advent of a number of new projects and the expansion of the Eemshaven will result in a considerable increase in the number of ship movements.
PILOT STATIONS
Region North has four pilot stations at sea where registered pilots embark or disembark. For Harlingen, these pilot stations are situated at the entrance to the Stortemelk and the Vlieree. For Delfzijl and Eemshaven, they are at the entrance to Westereems and near Borkum. The pilot information has been organised in such a manner that they can serve all posts in an integrated manner.
NAUTICAL ADVICE
Our registered pilots do more than the pilotage of sea-going vessels. The region is actively involved in finding solutions to logistical problems. Our expertise is also used to make possible special transports and to provide nautical advice on the infrastructure of the river and the ports. If necessary, we participate in simulation studies for new projects. There are close links with competent authorities and other service providers to ensure high quality. As an organisation, we are open to innovative developments to further elevate the quality of our services.
